The Market for virtualization, servers and storage

Data continues to grow and servers remain an important part of an organization. Nevertheless, as businesses become more digital, the need for investment in the area increases.

This market has grown rapidly in recent times, thanks to the pandemic, which has driven the digitalization of business. With adaptation to a new normal, the focus has shifted to efficiency, cost optimization and customer welfare.

Today, the concern is not only about data growth, but also about business continuity, security and compliance.

According to Marco Vicente of Toshiba, worldwide, 41 zetabytes of information were produced in 2019. By 2022 that production had risen to 97 zetabytes, and the forecast for 2025 is 181 zetabytes, an enormity that needs to be stored somewhere.

The best technology that covers all these needs is virtualization, which brings advantages such as cost reduction, resource optimisation, among others.

In fact, like all other technologies, the data center is also moving towards full virtualization.

The Cloud has also taken on a new life, which has impacted the server and storage market. Much is questioned about the arrival of the Public Cloud, an as-a-Service solution increasingly sought after by customers, and the role it played on the relevance of servers and storage. However, specialists do not recognize this event, comparing that with virtualization servers have not stopped being sold either.

It is underlined that, with the use of Public Clouds, it is also possible to have access to disaster recovery services or backup storage outside the organization. However, it is highlighted that not everything goes to this solution. There will still be many data centers and a lot of edge computing.

Storage virtualization is about sharing resources by pooling the physical storage of multiple devices into one centralized pool. The new storage virtualization, called 2.0, is more effective than the traditional approach since most of the new content and data is unstructured, which makes companies unable to manage it all. Likewise, it is essential for optimization, availability, redundancy, elasticity and security.

The idea then is for organizations to move this data to object storage, eliminating traditional backups and replacing them with real-time replication of immutable data to a remote cluster.

With the storage needs of enterprises increasing, storage virtualization 2.0 offers several advantages to businesses such as improved manageability of data of any kind, reduced costs, and even greater protection against data loss.

Additionally, with this technology, organizations no longer need to forecast storage needs, as they can add the exact amount they need at any time. And they can increase cluster capacity with no reconfiguration and no downtime.

The VDI solution was also considered by some companies, as it allows users to securely access information and documents, while protecting company data. Likewise, there was also a growth in software-defined networking, with a clear focus on network virtualization in order to improve remote working.

The main pillars of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) are modernization and digitalization, with the Digital Transition as the main component, with funds of around 2.4 billion euros. However, the delay in the approval of the State budget has postponed the implementation of the RRP funds and, in addition, many companies are no longer interested in this support once they realize that they cannot meet all the requirements.

It should be noted that, although the RRP is very focused on the public sector, there are other European funds that are very relevant. Summing all the support, the amount of financial resources available and allocated to Portugal in the coming years are indeed relevant.

However, the pandemic period was difficult for companies. Many stepped up investments, others failed to thrive financially and some even did nothing at all, just renewed maintenance contracts.

Staying on the sidelines of Digital Transformation is absolutely not an option. If you don’t evolve digitally, you won’t be able to reach the new consumer, compete in the new global marketplace, attract the best talent or ensure the necessary degree of innovation.
