Cybersecurity: Top on the list of corporate priorities

The Portuguese economic fabric is made up, above all, of companies, and the business world depends, more and more, on technology.

To ensure business continuity, it is essential that the organization meets minimum cybersecurity requirements. A good cybersecurity plan is the difference between operations grinding to a halt for an extended period or customers and employees barely experiencing a cyberattack.

The truth is that in recent years cybercrime has reached record levels, and 2022 was even a record year for the volume of phishing scams, cyberattacks, data breaches, and crypto heists.

Being a victim of a cyber attack is no longer a matter of “if”, but “when”. To do so, it is crucial to invest in the area of cybersecurity and, over the last few years, it has become too complex a task for organizations to do it on their own, as most companies do not have the skills or resources to guarantee these processes.

According to IDC, the industries that will invest the most in security products and services this 2023 are banking, discrete manufacturing, professional services, and government.

IDC’s “World Security Spending Guide” expects worldwide spending on security solutions and services to reach $219 billion by 2023, representing a 12.1% increase over 2022.

As for the investment in hardware, software and services related to cybersecurity, the estimated value is 300 billion dollars by 2026. These values are justified by the continuous virtual attacks that have been increasingly destructive, requiring the creation of a hybrid and secure work environment that allows compliance with data privacy requirements.

In order to achieve a higher level of security, it is important that companies use advanced security tools such as Monitoring, Detection and Response (MDR) and Advanced Detection and Response (XDR) Services that make it possible to monitor, detect, and respond to cyber threats in real time.

According to Gartner, the demand for these cloud-based detection and response solutions will increase significantly in the coming years.

Another very important point in combating these cyber dangers is investing in security awareness for the entire organization. With this, employees become aware of good information security practices, and at the same time know how to protect the company’s assets and their own personal information.

Cybersecurity has assumed an increasingly important role in the daily lives of all individuals and, especially, in companies. However, it is important to demystify that this role is only and exclusively of the IT team. These concerns and decisions should come, above all, from the top management.

The way forward to ensure not only the protection of personal information and privacy, but also for companies to protect their data and systems, is through the consolidation of cybersecurity.

To improve levels even further, the ideal is to add a cybersecurity service provider with the capability, experience and holistic approach to ensure the necessary stabilization.
